Guidance Notes

We can only offer general guidance with regards to grade levels. If in doubt, please consult with your child’s teacher who has more direct knowledge of their level and personality. *

Please ensure that you sign up for the correct event according to the grade level of your child.

It is a requirement that children under the age of 12 are accompanied at all times by a responsible adult.

When entering your email address, please add the parents email only and one that is checked frequently, as we will send you further correspondence.

Junior Division

If your student or child has passed a grade exam recently and is comfortable at the new, higher grade level, that is where they should be enrolled.

For those students not taking grade exams, here are some helpful guidelines to locate their correct placement level:

Grade 1
Fluent in 1st position in C, G, D major, simple slurs max. three notes, basic difference between legato and staccato articulations. Comfortable reading in 2/4, 3/3 and 4/4 time signatures.

Grade 2
Forward and backwards extensions in first position (so B flat and A major keys) and knowledge of fourth position, so G major scale in 2 octaves. Some familiarity with 6/8 time signature. Hooked bowing and doing two up bows in a row to finish phrases nicely.

Grade 3
Half, second and third positions added but with no extensions and generally more fluency in shifting. More complex rhythms with ties and dots.

Grade 4
Using 5th and 6th positions for A and B flat in 2 octave scales (and 7th position for B flat arpeggio in two octaves).  Extensions in the other four-finger positions. They should know what detaché is, and be aware that the bow can and does bounce (Squire Joyeuse is a grade 4 piece).

Senior Division

The Senior event is for grade 5-8+ level students.

Senior section grade 5-6 is for students who have passed grade 5 up to those who have attained grade 6 and are working towards grade 7.

Senior section grade 7-8+ is for those who have attained grade 7 level and beyond.

*We understand that not all students take grade exams so if you have doubts about the suitable level, please ask your teacher for advice.  We generally recommend that the level should be comfortable for your child, so that they can participate without feeling overwhelmed by difficulties. Some students may have a preference based on their peer group attendees.  Please consider this carefully before making your booking.

CELLODAY – Performance classes

On the senior event for grade 5 -8+ students, there are two different performance classes where students can perform solo pieces.

In the Performance classes from 2-3.30pm, the majority of students choose to play a solo piece. This is not compulsory, but most attendees opt for this opportunity to perform. Each student can choose from a list of teachers. We will do our best to accommodate individual preferences but we cannot guarantee placement. Allocations are on a first-come first-served basis. These classes take place in small groups, usually with around 5 students in each group. If you do not have a preference, enter N/A. If you apply for the 2.00pm classes, please do not apply for the 3.00pm pm masterclass.

The Artiste-Masterclass from 3.00pm – 4.30pm is an opportunity for just a few students to perform in front of a large audience. All students of the right level (Grade 8+ for Matthew Sharp) are eligible to apply. The LCS committee decision on who is selected to perform in this class is final. In this session, the majority of students learn by observing the artiste teacher working with the few selected students. If you apply for this option, please do not apply for the 2 pm classes.

“Work” is the name of the complete piece. “Composer” is the name of the person who wrote the piece. “Movement” applies to sonatas or concertos, etc. where you need to state which part of the larger work will be played.
