Release and Breathe. A day for cellists plus string playing observers.

Tuesday June 13 10.30-5.30

London

There is so much pressure on musicians to produce, to be visible, effortful and to project forward, that it seems we have forgotten how to listen inwardly, to relax back, to follow, to surrender and to breathe. No wonder so many suffer from stage fright and tension. During this workshop we will begin the search for freedom and presence not in an endless quest for control but through the liberation of the spine and the breath. Through gentle yoga based practices, we will find our ground, our backs and look at even the smallest movement as it originates at our centre. Through breath work we will learn how the natural expansion and contraction of the body supports effortless phrasing and technique from bow changes to shifting. Through mindfulness practice we will learn how to free ourselves from crippling thoughts and judgements and delight in the present moment. Our aim is to give you tools which you can use daily to become present both in the practice room and on stage, and to find ease on your main instrument, the human body, and joy in music making. This is a hands on day for twelve cellists in which each person will receive individual attention.
