SLAVA! A Tribute to Mstislav Rostropovich. In Aid of the Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya Foundation Sunday 30th November 2008 CONCERT | FILMS | FORUM Natalia Gutman cello Mischa Maisky cello Ivan Monighetti cello Elena Prokina soprano Julian Rachlin violin Ian Brown piano Itamar Golan piano Jonathan Papp piano Cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, or ‘Slava’ as he was known to beloved friends and musicians the world over, left an overwhelming and enduring musical legacy upon his death in April 2007, aged 80. His accomplishments have influenced cellists from all corners of the globe. As the first Honorary Patron of our Society, Slava’s extraordinary contributions to music will be celebrated in an evening concert with a dazzling array of international stars. The afternoon event includes some rare films and a forum led by his biographer, Elizabeth Wilson. Slava collaborated with the 20th century’s outstanding composers—Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Britten and Penderecki amongst them, and the evening’s programme is devoted in large part to the fruits of these lasting friendships. This tribute brings together friends and colleagues to honour an unforgettable life in music. It promises to be one of the highlights of the London concert season. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya Medical Foundation, established by Rostropovich and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, to promote the health of children throughout Russia and the surrounding republics.
