Following on the success of our Playing with Bach event, we present our opening season event devoted to the much-loved cello works of Ludwig van Beethoven in the unusual context of his well known contemporaries - Duport, Hummel, Ries and Romberg - all of whom composed for the cello and who contributed either directly or indirectly to Beethoven’s awareness of the instrumental and expressive possibilities of the cello.

The evening concert at Wigmore Hall will feature works by some of these composers as well as by Beethoven, including the beloved Sonata in A major, op 69.

We honour our esteemed colleague and cellist extraordinaire Anner Bylsma with a Lifetime Achievement Award in a special presentation at Wigmore Hall.

Honouring Jacqueline du Pré
The Films of Christopher Nupen

Sunday 21st March 2010 2.00 pm-5.00 pm
Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre

Renowned filmmaker and broadcaster Christopher Nupen shares his films and memories of Jacqueline du Pré from a close friendship that lasted for 26 years. Some of his material is world famous, some of it has been seen by very few, but all of it will be presented in new contexts. This fundraising event on behalf of the London Cello Society, presents an intimate tribute to an artist who remains gloriously vibrant in the public mind.

“What Christopher Nupen has done to keep the spirit of Jacqueline du Pré alive in the world is a benediction, and what he has to say about her is deeply revealing, historically important and quite remarkable.” Lady Evelyn Barbirolli.
